The bombshell admission is a reversal of past assurances given to councillors and the public after a 2017 award-winning Spectator investigation looked at why the seven-kilometre parkway sees twice as many crashes than the adjoining east-west Linc.
Of the 994 crashes on municipal parkways between 2012 and 2015, 668 were on the Red Hill compared to 326 on the Linc. That includes seven deaths in that time period on the creek valley parkway that prompted families of victims to appeal for safety measures like median barriers.
